“Connection” by Elastica
Dad’s Song of the Day, Sept. 17, 2025
I was looking over the DSOTDs and realized that I’d yet to include a female artist, which is a silly oversight on my part. One that I’m going to rectify in the coming days.
Today’s is “Connection” from the eponymous debut album by Elastica, and I literally could’ve chosen any of half-a-dozen total bangers from that album, which is easily in my top 10 of the ‘90s.
The leader of this group is Justine Fritshmann and she is a total badass. At the time of this record (around 1994) she was dating Damon Albarn, who was the frontman of Blur and making incredible music of his own at the same time.
There was some controversy about this song because it (obviously) stole the guitar riff from a song by Wire, called “Three Girl Rhumba”…you should absolutely check out that song and Wire, too, especially the Pink Flag album.
As for Elastica, they never really matched this album and Justine left the music business for awhile… but then came back a few years later, developing and writing for her best friend: another brilliant woman artist who will certainly have a DSOTD in the future: M.I.A.
