"Everybody Scream" by Florence and the Machine (2025)
Dad's Song of the Day #67, Nov. 4, 2025
In my earnest effort to take in some new music, I accept that, from time to time, I’m going to flat-out humiliate myself…So here goes:
This Florence and the Machine is pretty awesome, right?
Okay, I get it…maybe recommending them to you two might be like saying, “Not sure if you’ve ever tried this ‘pizza’ but it tastes pretty good,” or “You might find paddling a canoe on a lake to be a pleasant experience.”
So, while I’ve long been aware of Florence and the Machine—and I assume I’ve probably heard them ambiently ten thousand times—it’s only since yesterday that I’ve actually listened to them on purpose.
Specifically, I’ve put in time with their new album. “Everybody Scream” and it’s grabbed me so far. The album was released on Hallowe’en, which might be purposeful, as it certainly gives off a spooky, haunted vibe.
The title track, “Everybody Scream,” has a bold, gigantic sound to it and startling vocals from Florence and a coterie of backup singers. In the video, they are all decidedly “witchy,” and this fits perfectly.
They’re singing about the physical and emotional commitment required by star performers and the toll it takes on them:
But look at me run myself ragged
Blood on the stage
But how can I leave you when you’re screaming my name?
Obviously, it’s time for me to dig deeper into Florence and the Machine!
