“Long Distance Winner” by Buckingham Nicks
Dad’s Song of the Day, Sept. 19, 2025
This album arrived in the Mail this afternoon (I pre-ordered it in June!)so an easy choice for finding a DSOTD.
I know our whole family enjoys Fleetwood Mac and it blows me away how popular the Rumours album remains to this day—particularly among young people— close to 50 years after its release.
Prior to joining Fleetwood Mac in the mid-70s (and COMPLETELY altering their sound from a pure blues-rock band) Stevie nicks and Lindsay Buckingham recorded this album, uncreatively called “Buckingham Nicks”…and it was a total flop.
For decades, it’s had almost mythical status: original copies of the vinyl record were hard to find and cost a bloody fortune! Also not even available on streaming until today.
Well, today was the long-awaited re-release of “Buckingham Nicks” (on “baby-blue” vinyl for some reason) and so I’m very happy to finally own it and listen to it.
After a couple listens, I’ve chosen, “Long Distance Winner”, mainly because it sounds most “Fleetwood Mac-ish”, with virtuoso Lindsay guitar playing and haunting beautiful Stevie vocals…but there are others (incl. “Frozen Love”, “Crying in the Night”, “Lola my love”) that are equally strong: I’m going to love getting into this one!
