“Rudy” by Supertramp
Dad’s Song of the Day, Sept. 8. 2025
I had a different one lined up for today but, sadly, I heard this morning that Rick Davies died yesterday.
Davies was one of the leaders of Supertramp: pianist and singer on some of their best songs. (He had the lower- pitched voice)
This group was more popular in Canada than in any other country and we had a special relationship. I’m pretty certain every person in Toronto owned the “Crime of the Century “ album, and went (or CLAIMED they went) to their 1979 show at exhibition stadium! Well, I was there with my friend Stan Bonca and it remains one of my all-time favorite concerts.
Especially memorable from that show was the performance of Rick Davies’ song about loneliness, “Rudy”, which was accompanied by a very cool large-screen film of a train, chugging along to the beat of the song. (If you listen closely to this live version, you can hear the crowd react to the train film, when it starts halfway through).
RIP Rick Davies.

I loved Supertramp! Of course I never purchased an album. But I ‘borrowed’ Bruce’s Supertramp album all the time.
