“Stonehenge” by Spinal Tap
Dad’s Song of the Day #25, Sept. 25, 2025
A couple days ago, I went with my friend Arik to see the new Spinal Tap movie, the sequel to the all-time classic “rockumentary” that was released 41 years ago(!!!)
It was kind of hard to see how old everyone looks. I mean 1984 was a long time ago, but, surely, I don’t look this much older…do I??
Anyways, the new movie is pretty good but not nearly on the level of the original, which is obviously one of the funniest movies ever. I mean, can you imagine a world without “these go to eleven”, “none. none more black” or “it’s such a fine line between stupid and…clever”?
The new movie has several great, funny moments, particularly the end credits—all completely improvised—which are tremendous…and you have to stay until the very end.
However, the highlight for me was the performance of “Stonehenge.” If you saw the original movie (I think Angus did but not sure about Polly), you’ll remember the utter humiliation of the “Stonehenge” sequence. This time, the boys are determined to avoid that mistake…and it’s all just bloody brilliant. (The attached clip doesn’t give away the perfect ending.)
The title on the link gives a spoiler, and it’s clear that Elton is having the time of his life sharing the stage with Spinal Tap…but I really think this version of Spinal Tap’s hilarious attempt at prog rock tops the original from the first movie. Musically, they are no King Crimson , but hopefully this will urge you to at least watch (or re-watch) the original “Spinal Tap”…and if you enjoy that, then check out this sequel, too.
